Tips for handling a full kitchen refurbishment

A full kitchen refurbishment can be both a stressful and costly experience for you and your family. Here are a few tips to make sure the process runs as smooth as possible.

If possible, set up a temporary kitchen somewhere in your home

Having a small area away from the construction will enable you to prepare meals like lunches and other smaller items. Having appliances like a microwave and a kettle allows you to prepare things like ready meals and other convenient snacks. It will also save you money as it means you’ll rely less on eating out.

Make sure that you do not pack away the following items:

  • A good knife – When preparing food, a plastic knife will not be able to cut through meats and other tough ingredients
  • Salt and Pepper – as well as any other seasonings that you use regularly
  • Microwavable Containers – These will come in handy when reheating leftovers in the microwave.

If the weather permits, have a barbecue

If you’re lucky enough to be carrying out your refurbishment during the summer, don’t be afraid to make the most of the sun and get the BBQ out. Not only is this a great way to incorporate some fresh meat into your diet, but it will also get everyone together in a team which can prove pretty stressful for a household.

Use the time to discover new cuisine

During this time, you will most likely find yourself eating out more often than you would like. So why not use this as an opportunity to try out some of your local restaurants which serve food that you wouldn’t usually make at home. You may discover your new favourite dish and it might even inspire you to become more adventurous yourself in the kitchen when you finally get to cook again.

Use it as an opportunity to travel

If you are comfortable to allow building works to continue in your absence, it can be the perfect time for a short break or to schedule a business trip. You could argue that if you’re going to be spending money on eating out you may as well do it on holiday. Or why not visit some relatives and score some home cooked meals!

Be prepared to lose some control

Having your kitchen refurbished is an extremely stressful time and therefore it is okay to not feel as in control of everything as you usually would. Accept that your home will be messier than usual and that it will only last for a short period of time, it is important to think of the bigger picture!
