Our Guide
to Installing
Kitchen Worktops
A durable, hygienic countertop is often the core function and design feature in any modern family kitchen – but fitting it to achieve the look and purpose that you want can be tricky.
While, of course, it is entirely possible to install kitchen worktops yourself – particularly with laminate and solid wood surfaces, which tend to require less tools, strength and logistical planning – self-installation (especially with heavy materials such as granite and quartz), however, can be problematic to fit right without an experienced installation team to hand. Kitchen worktop installations also often require a variety of different tools, from different sized saws to power drills, so an experienced fitter can eliminate the need for you to guess which tools you may need and go out and purchase them.
Most kitchen supply companies not only provide the kitchen countertop materials and fittings to be used, but also offer a full installation service too – often included in the final purchase price. Visiting a kitchen showroom in person can be a great way to start your kitchen installation planning, allowing you to discuss your exact wants and needs with a supplier and fitter, who will work with you to plan and finalise your kitchen installation from start to finish.
Before beginning your kitchen installation, the install team will usually ensure that all materials have been precisely cut down to size, with any hob cut-outs made and all edges neat. The team will be able to confirm the exact final measurements of your countertops, including front edges or overhangs, and worktop joints, so that everything will comfortably fit. Often it is a good idea to make allowances for any movement that can be causes by humidity or temperature fluctuations too.
If you’re looking to be involved in the installation process while the work is being done on your property, kitchen worktop installers are usually more than happy to collaborate with you to co-ordinate the project and achieve your desired look. It’s often helpful for our installers to know not just where the countertops should be installed, but also exactly how you want these materials to sit to reach the perfect aesthetic for you. This is even more important if they are fitting a whole new kitchen as opposed to simply replacing the old countertops with new.
